TASA — The African Spelling Academy — was founded on the belief that with the right structure, guidance, and discipline, students can achieve exceptional results in language and academic performance.
The academy was established by Daniel Obeng-Davis, whose journey into spelling and language coaching began as a personal effort to support his two daughters, then students of Oyster Academy. Through focused research, self-learning, and consistent practice—drawing on resources such as the Merriam-Webster Unabridged Dictionary—he developed a practical and effective coaching approach.
This method delivered proven results. Under his guidance, both daughters achieved three consecutive top-five finishes at the Ghana Spelling Bee national finals in their first three attempts. These outcomes highlighted the effectiveness of a training approach rooted in understanding words, rather than memorising them.
At the heart of TASA’s methodology is etymology—teaching students to understand word origins, roots, and affixes. This approach builds deeper comprehension, sharper reasoning, and lasting confidence.
Today, TASA provides structured academic training that develops strong language skills, critical thinking, and confident performance, preparing students for competitive academic environments and long-term success.

To provide structured, high-quality academic training that develops strong language skills, critical thinking, and confident performance, preparing students to excel in competitive academic environments and beyond.
To become a leading centre for language and academic excellence in Africa, empowering students with the skills, discipline, and confidence to compete, communicate, and succeed at the highest academic levels.
At TASA, we believe academic excellence is built on understanding, discipline, and confidence—not memorisation alone. Our approach focuses on structured learning that helps students understand language deeply and apply their knowledge with clarity.
Etymology sits at the core of our training. By teaching word origins, roots, and affixes—particularly from Greek and Latin—students learn to decode unfamiliar words, understand meaning logically, and pronounce accurately. This transforms spelling and vocabulary learning into a process of reasoning.
Instruction is supported by consistent practice, assessment, and performance coaching. Students develop critical thinking, confident communication, and the ability to perform effectively under academic pressure. While competition readiness is an important outcome, our focus remains on long-term academic skills and confident learning.
Understanding over memorisation. Structure over chance. Confidence through mastery.
Every TASA programme is designed to help students think critically, communicate clearly, and perform with confidence.
